January 2010

Travel Hot Spots
By Becky Blaylock

The forecasts for 2010 predict that more people will be traveling, but the numbers are still well below what they were before the recession.  This should keep the prices down and present excellent travel deals. In 2010 I am giving anyone who books and completes their vacation through me a voucher for 2-nights’ accommodations!!  I also will give you a voucher if you recommend someone to me who books and completes their travel!!

The headline-grabbing events are:

The Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Feb. 12-28.

The month-long FIFA World Cup soccer games in South Africa, beginning June 11.

The Shanghai World Expo, May 1 – Oct 31, a 21st century World’s Fair that organizers are hoping will attract as many as 70 million visitors.

Oberammergan, Germany, where the oldest continually acted Passion Play in Europe has been performed roughly every 10 years since the 1600’s.  The show will be staged May through October and is typically seen by a half-million people.

Spain is expecting more pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago, an ancient route to Galicia, where the cathedral is said to house the remains of St. James the Apostle.  Typically, the route draws more visitors when the saint’s Feast Day, July 25, falls on a Sunday, as it will in 2010.

Some of the more affordable popular destinations are:  Argentina, Turkey, Thailand, Morocco, and Romania (where you can stay at a ski resort with lift tickets for $50/night).  Mexico is still a good bargain and easy to get to.  The H1N1 virus and drug problems are not deterring travelers.  It is recommended that you get the vaccine and don’t tangle with any drug lords, though!  Popular cities are; Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, and Mexico City.

Cruises still are extremely popular and affordable.  If you can travel last minute you may be able to get crazy-cheap rates.  Most people need to book well in advance for the best rates and cabin preference.  I recommend booking at least 6 months in advance and better yet 8 months (especially for groups).

In the United States Hawaii (the Big Island) and the Florida Panhandle beaches are top destinations.  If you are going to the Panhandle try a drive along Highways 98 or 30-A.  There are many walkovers, pavilions, parks, and rentals for bikes, kayaks, and beach chairs.  There are a variety of places to stay from resorts to cottages.

If flying and cruising are beyond your budget, you can still be a trendy traveler by hopping in your car and driving to the nearest national park.  Visits to national parks were up over 4% in 2009.

Your memories are priceless so it doesn’t matter where you vacation.  Just go and make some and enjoy life!

Travel Tip:  Be sure to check with your airline in advance before you travel.  The latest events are changing and increasing security measures!

Thank you for the support our sponsors:
